What's the most important thing during a newborn session?

Baby safety of course. When choosing a newborn photographer you want to make sure that your little one is in good hands. Anyone can look at pictures online and try to replicate what they see, but there is more to it than that. Looks can be deceiving with certain poses and a lot of them are even photoshopped. It is important that your newborn photographer took the time to take education corses on how to pose baby properly.

I worked as a newborn photographer for a company years ago when I was first starting out and that is where I learned the basics. The next step for me was doing it on my own and taking other education courses online for more advanced poses. Being a mom does help, but that isn't enough on its own. Being a mom and posing babies into positions for the camera are two totally different things. The education is 100% very important.

Below you will see behind the scenes for the pose "froggy." A baby cannot support themselves like this, this is not realistic. For this pose a spotter is needed. Someone holds the baby's hands, and then after that for the next shot someone holds the baby head. This pose is never able to be rushed and can even take 40 minutes at times. Education is important to learn how to do this properly.

When working with a sibling

a spotter is needed at all times. Even if the sibling always holds the baby. They'll need to be making sure the baby head stays up right so their airway is safe. A sibling can get excited and drop the baby, you never know. Always use a spotter. They aren't in the picture, but here is a behind the scenes so you can tell that a spotter was there. Even when doing a bucket pose a spotter is always there. It is very very important. I can't stress that enough!

Even with 6+ month sitters, its important to make sure someone is right there as they can easily fall back, roll over, etc. It's important to make sure the photographer you choose has the education needed to make sure your little one is safe.
